golf country RHD conversion
« on: 01 November 2013, 18:00 »
in the middle of trying to sort out some steering issues on a country which has been converted to RHD. the rack was leaking and was reconned but on fitting it all back up the steering was very notchy and ended up damaging rack on a short drive. i know from checking various parts catalogues that the country was never available RHD? the connecting rod from the rack to the colum was used from the original LHD(i was told by garage that did conversion) but when i look at the part on vagcat etc,it doesnt look like it and there isnt a part number on it. has anyone done such a conversion before? wondering if this link should be longer/shorter from lhd onto a RHD rack? are there any technical manuals with the steering geometry of syncros or countrys? any help greatfully welcomed(before i go nuts!) cheers mcgill

think you'll find the recon rack was a bad one.

sadly reconditioned often means painted
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

the rack was reconned at my friends place and was ok, i cant find a part number for a bottom steering joint for a country in RHD on vagcat etc, there is for a syncro RHD but the country is on a jacked up chassis/frame and the link is much longer, cheers mcgill

Hey up McGill.  How's tricks in Shotts?  Wet?  Bet it's bloody raining.

I remember the Country being available in the UK, but I'm not sure whether VW didn't just flog 'em LHD as per the Rallye?

How did the current set up damage the re-con rack?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

The couple of RHD Country's Ive seen are all converted post production. Ive not tried it myself as ive got used to things being the wrong way around, but Im guessing that the UJ is the same as per the original and the boot is original too as these would be the only variables. Try it with another rack (i know its a bal ache to swap). If you were local you it would be easier to help
