Gear stick not centering
« on: 30 October 2013, 21:22 »
Hi all,

Previous owner covered everything in wax oil under the bonnet. While that is great for corrosion it has a few down sides!

My gear stick will not "centre" and is a bit vague.  I have replaced most of the important elements in the shift mech but it is still reluctant to spring back to the middle and the box is not forcing things.  Is there a part at the end of the relays that should spring back?

Thanks,
Martin

Hi martin, on all the 020 boxes, the mechanism to make them spring back to the centre is inside the gearbox, the linkage actually doesn't have any sprung parts. If any of the linkage is dry or stiff it will stop it returning properly as the spring in the gearbox is quite weak anyway.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for that.  Will give the whole mech a good clean where I can, but is the spring replaceable in the box without a full strip down? Do you have a part number?

Cheers,
Martin

Is the selector mechanism set right and does it go into gear easy?

Sounds like the mechanism is not seated in the correct position. Loosen them two 13mm's, get someone to pull the gear stick back then forward and into the central position.

Tighten the nuts and it should be dead centre and go into every gear

I'm not entirely sure to be honest, it's been a while since I stripped an 020 box and cant remember how accessible it would be to do in the car. Let me look in to it for you.
