I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you'll probably be waiting a long, long time.
The sad fact is; it's only an 8v GTI engine, which is barely a GTI engine at all. Mk2 golfs with the 8v engine are still sought after as they have the classic looks and are, despite everything, quite nippy and fun to drive. I think the only way this mk3 would possibly appreciate is if it was a meticulously maintained VR6 or 16v GTI. And even then, expect to wait a good number of years.
