mounting a momo steering wheel

hi there

i've bought a momo wheel and a Mountney steering wheel boss.

now then the problem is that the boss is too small for the splines on the steering collum.
Halfords insist it is the right boss for a mk2, and say that i have to remove the splined washer on the steering collum. 

This makes sense, except that splined washer (as they call it) is on solid with no obvious way of removing it.

A larger diameter wheel boss would be the easy option, but as halfords don't have another part number
for a mk2 this could be a hassel..

anyone fitted a new wheel to their mk2???
how did you get on?

take your socket set, steering wheel etc along to halfords and explain in graphic detail that it dosnt fit, show them, dont let them fook with your car but show them, not being funny but halfords along with kwick fit and motorworld and few others dont deserve to be any where near your vw!!!, as half of the staff even though 'trained' know fook all and will sell you anything to boost there ratings!!! so go show em there wrong and sort it out.... these muppets need dissin for sellin poor/wrog stuff in my opinion...

I seem to think that there are 2 different diameters for the steering column shaft that may be the problem,

or I may be talking sh!te I'm sure someone on here will correct me if I'm wrong

not sure on wether momo will fit a mounteny boss anyways.. i thought they made it diffo so you couldnt interchange.... but then halfords will sell you owt....

as far as I understood it there are 2 size splines - a smaller pre 1990 one and after 1990 it is slightly bigger - don;t know the sizes though and don't quote me either

get a boss for a late mk2 or a mk3 one. i'm pretty sure mountny and momo fit each other.

Yep, they changed around 1889, bit confusing , I have had large spline F reg Golfs, and small spline G reg. Whatever, the splined bit of the steering column is WAAAAAAAY bigger on the '89 onwards cars......looks to be at least twice as wide!!!!

Halfords are staffed exclusively by spotty teenaged mongs who only know what the computer tells them.

Persist, Mountney do list a boss kit suitable for your car......

The larger diameter spline is just a sleeve which fits over the smaller one, was introduced in 89 I think. I took the one off my last golf to fit an earlier steerng wheel, did it using an old adjustable spanner tightened around behind the sleeve and a gear puller, pushing on the steering column. Came off ok, but I found it impossible to shift without the puller!
