Mk2 GTI 8v Coolant level warning light always on
« on: 21 October 2013, 12:55 »
Hi all,

Seemingly overnight my Golf has developed this weird fault and I am not sure what the problem is. The coolant level warning light is always lit (not flashing, constantly lit) even when the ignition is off, keys out. The MFA/clock has frozen at 21.20 and the rev counter now has a mind of its own.

Ive checked the coolant level many times and it is always fine and apart from that the car runs perfectly. Speedo, temp, petrol gauge all fine, indicator, battery warning lights all fine. Im thinking it may be some kind of sensor malfunction or a short circuit?

I am mainly confused that the warning light stays on even when the ignition is off.

Anbody have any ideas?

pull the fuse for the Clocks/MFA (interior lights etc) and see does it reset

sounds more like a short circuit/bad earth in the board

Pull the expansion bottle plug and clean it up.
If light is still on wiggle a paper clip into the plug and bridge it and see if it makes any difference?

Just to follow up.

I tried that fuse method mentioned above and it didn't work but....

I took the battery out of my car while it was off the road for the winter and when I hooked the battery back up last week everything seem to be working as normal. MFA is now unfrozen and the temp/coolant level light works as normal. Result!

A classic case of turning it off and on again it seems.
