edition 30 vs mk6 GTI
« on: 20 October 2013, 19:11 »
Hello, I have been reading allot on the forum and got lots of information, so this is my first post.

I have a mk5 1.6fsi at the moment and looking to change it for either an edition 30 or a mk6 GTI.

My question is, is there a noticeable difference between the cars when then are both standard and when they are both remapped?

I know that the edition 30 has a larger turbo so the standard bhp is 230, then with a stage 1 remap it would be about 300 bhp.
The mk6 GTI as standard is 210 bhp and with a stage 1 remap would be roughly 275 bhp.

From that information and what I have read on the forum I believe that the edition 30 will be quicker standard and remapped compared to the mk6 GTI.

So, I am wondering is the difference that noticeable, or is it just 10ths of a second.

Cheers

I had a mapped ED30, which was 300BHP and felt amazingly quick with the DSG box.

I now have a MK6 GTI standard, and although it is punchy, its nowhere near the launch the ED30 had, but its 90BHP under so I expected that.

That said the MK6 is a nicer shape, more refined and modern inside, and still has potential.

Expect typical peak power increases of around 40 BHP + on both engines.

20 BHP peak difference on stock mapping is probably a small difference on the road.

What about the ED35? It has the TFSI engine but the looks and interior of the MK6.

The Fueling system on the TSI engine is better out of the box but there are several pump upgrades available for the TFSI engine. There is a problem with HPFP Cam Follower wear on TFSI engine which in the worst cases results in a replacement Camshaft but this is rare and inexpensive to manage (£20-25 to replace the Follower) and straight forward enough do DIY.

I went from a mapped edition 30 to a MK6 gti.

Obviously the standard Mk6 is a lot slower, but overall its a nicer place to be, enhanced further if you get the 18" Monzas on.

also depends on how old a car you want to own, last Ed30s were made in early 2008 with Pirellis for the rest of 2008, mk6 GTIs started in 2009

tsi and K04 completely different in power delivery

Thanks for all the response.

I agree, the mk6 is a nicer placer to be.
Unfortunately an edition 35 is out of my budget.

There is a difference in power, but as you said it is going to be a marginal difference on the road( coming from a 1.6 they are both going to feel quick).

The age thing is a factor. For a little bit more money I can get a newer car with less miles, and a nicer interior.

I am convinced to get a mk6 now, although an ed 30 would have been nice, a mk6 is a better overall package.

Just posted my mk6 for sale in the classifieds. I have been on the forum for a while but had to re-register as my hard disk failed & had to be replaced!

Recently got a MK6 GTI, and like yourself was previously driving the wifes mk5 1.6 fsi. The power may be less than the ED30, but it looks and feels nicer on the inside and out imo. And back to the power thing, there is still plenty to put a smile on your face. Did a 300 mile round trip last week and it was great, 800 mile round trip upto scotland planned for next week, cant wait.

I was in some boat also was looking for Ed30's for ages and just did not like the Mk6 at all, but then over the months months it just grew on me. I remember seeing a pic of the Mk6 from the side in 3 door CW with the monzas...

That won me over + as mentioned the interior is more modern and felt like a big upgrade from my 51 plate Pug.

Nearly 2 years later and still a happy customer a few hick ups but now sorted and some blufin added to the mix next year and I'll be even happier
