It's the end of my VW ownership, thank you!
« on: 18 October 2013, 11:45 »
Hello boys,

So 2 days ago, on my way back home from work late at night I managed to park my car in a ditch. Unfortunately the car is a write off, so that's it for me in terms of VW's for now anyway. I'm going to see what the jap scene has to offer, with cars in mind at the moment being an RX7 or a Skyline.

Crash was rather unfortunate although my fault. It's a road I could drive with my eyes closed and it's one of those cases of over confidence. I came round a sharp bend on the quick side (it's a 60mph road), conditions were damp, and car was under control, however as I was coming round the apex there was a mercedes with the full beams on and the fancy xenon lights. This threw my concentration off and the rear end stepped out. I held it but at this point I was on the other side of the road and cars oncoming, so I swerved back onto my lane while the car was still unsteady and this caused the rear to clip the curb on my side of the road, which bent the rear wheel and threw me in between two oncoming cars, over a curb and into a ditch. Thankfully I missed the cars, one which happened to be a friend of mine. I hit the ditch, about 200m from the apex at about 40mph.

This is the corner

clicky me!

And this is the ditch where I ended up, narrowly missing the electric post, although rear wheel did get caught in the anchoring cable.

Here

What saved my was my harness, airbag didn't deploy and I didn't move an inch from where I was strapped in. I had to climb out of passenger side as driver's side wing bent back into door preventing it from opening.

Here are pics of the car. Picture of the car in ditch was taken by my mate who after making sure I was alright he said "this is going on facebook!"

You can see the skidmarks across the grass, one is the tyre and the other is the wishbone/subframe.

Damage from steel cable and the curbing that threw me into the ditch. Rear wheel has a fair bit of toe in!

Roof is creased, as is the sill around halfway, it's bent in. Car is slightly banana shaped.

Engine was still running when I hit the ditch, switched off to prevent any damage, but upon closer inspection engine is good for resale, radiator didn't smash so there's no leaks anywhere. I shall be rebuilding the top end and selling the engine on as I know there's a few here that may be interested in purchasing it.

I'll be breaking the car up over the coming weeks/months and selling off what's salvageable, including 2 of the wheels which are in good condition, just needing a jetwash. Tyres I shall also be selling off (although I need to inspect the one that took the impact closely). Interior, tailgate, passenger door, and more will all be for sale at some point so keep your eyes peeled if you wish to buy stuff.

Much love and goodbye fellow car friends, I shall still be around from time to time but it's time to move on!

Peace

I do have to say even though it's a 60mph, that's a maximum not a target!

You're right, that road at night for me 60mph was usually a minimum target  :lipsrsealed:
