cam belt time

Belt needs changing any hits or tips pls? 16v

Change it with a full kit and make it a decent one.

Change the 4 bolts holding the lower pulley on.

Gsf told me can't have the kit,something to do with two types of tensioners?

Super easy once you have worked out which tensioner you need (remove top cam belt cover and look!)...

VW "special" tools can be fabbed out of 8mm steel bar and 4mm plate steel.  For the cam holder, a strip of 4mm steel and two sets of feeler gauges is fine.

Get the torque right on the tensioner bolt though, they are easy to overtighten and bend the tensioner locating pin-thingy.

Yeah there is two differnet stud sizes that the tensioner mounts onto, my 97 valver stud was too small for the early 16v tensioner I purchased cant remember the size though

later models had a thermo type tensioner which has the smaller hole.You can retro fit the earlier one as long as you have the stud that goes with it.

After giving Gsf reg number of car they are having trouble finding the correct tensioner,which is concerning?

Ok I've changed cambelts on twin cam vectras etc,what tools do I need to have at my disposal to change my golfs belt?

Its not a bad job to do really, you can buy the tensioner tool on ebay for little money and i makes things much simpler. Id advise changing water pump and thermostat whilst youve got everything out of the way and neither cost a lot.
