Why would you not want your local dealer's details at the bottom of the plate?

I would agree it looks cheap if it is a local crappy car supermarket (whenever I see CarGiant on a plate I always think "cheapskate") but to have a main dealer on there....not sure it looks cheap, more the opposite.

I thought that all legal plates had to show dealer info and postcode to gain the British Standard status?

Yes, the supplier or manufacturer of the plate not the car, otherwise you wouldn't be able to buy plates from anywhere else other than dealerships.

You are supposed to have the suppliers name, postcode and BS markings on there, but it is still possible to buy "show plates" without all that, or the need to produce your documents in order to get them made. Just search for "show number plates"

My mate has a garage and has a new style number plate making machine. Nowadays they are printed onto a clear transfer that in stuck onto the reflective white or yellow backing. They are not made with individual stickers applied by hand any more. The computer in the machine remembers every detail about the number plates it has made for future reference. However, it is accepted that occasionally plates are spoiled by forgetting to put the correct markings on and it is assumed that these are destroyed.

Now that would be nice but i don't see it happening. It's personal preference, i just don't want my dealership advertised on my car hence all stickers were immediately removed as well. The benefit of getting your own plates made up is that you can customise them within legal perameters of course, e.g. National flag, Euro sign, borders, style of writing

I have to agree with Craig on this one, i dont like the dealership details on my number plate but i know people that have gone back to the dealer to get a new plate when their old one looks crap just to have the details on so each to their own.

Just FYI, had to MOT the leon whilst waiting for my GTI now that shes 3 years old and i sailed through without any details on front or rear, so no one really cares that much or else i wouldve failed and been made to fork out for new plates

Sorry to bring back this post from the dead but it was the only one I could find about the number plate holder.

Anyway, I hit a deer but I was lucky enough only to come away with a broken number plate holder!

Does anyone know how to remove it? It seem like it's held on with expanding plastic bolts?
