How did everyone sell there old car?
« on: 15 October 2013, 06:06 »
Just out of curiosity what did you guys all do with your old motor? Sell it privately, at a dealer or part chopped it in?

If you sold it privately where did you advertise it?
Current - MK7 Golf GTI - Tornado Red, 5 Door, DSG, Performance Pack, Dynamic Chasis Control, Panoramic Sunroof, Discover Navigation, Dynaudio.

On Order - MK7 Golf R - Pearlescent Black, 3 Door, DSG, Vienna Leather, Discover Nav Pro, Rear View Camera, High Beam Assist, Keyless Entry, Dynaudio (Tech Pack)

All gone.

Now;

MK7 Golf R - Lapiz Blue, 5 Door, DSG, Carbon Nappa, Discover Nav Pro.

Part exed. Depends on the car you have and what it is worth. Most people prefer the reassurance of a dealer when they're dropping more than £10k, and easy access to finance - not so convenient on a private sale. P/xing a non-VAG car at a VW dealership will usually mean getting less than at the marque's native dealership. For me getting shot of a 2 year old VW Scirocco, it seemed far easier to p/x, and given the amount I got for it, It would've been hard to beat it in a private sale.

I tend to keep my cars for a long time, so they are cheap enough to easily sell privately. I will always buy my new car first having negotiated a better discount due to not having a px, then as I have the new car to drive around in, there is not too much of a rush to sell the old one, therefore potentially having to drop the price too much. It works out as a much better all round deal as you rarely get a good discount as well as a good px price from the dealer.

I've sold them all off the drive, without having to pay for adverts and often within a few days, so I can keep the old car insured whilst making use of the dealers 7 day insurance on the new one.

My 2004 audi a3 sline was advertised privately on autotrader and pistonheads. Sold within days of going up after autotrader cocked up the number in the advert.

My p/x opened right up due to the wait being about 9 weeks longer than expected. The fixed p/x for my car wouldn’t have been beaten privately – some non-VW dealerships were selling Sciroccos just like mine via ebay motors for around what I got in p/x.

But was that at the expense of a discount off the new car? If you got a top px value as well as your negotiated discount, you did very well.

I didn’t do so well on the new car discount. No-one was offering meaningful discount in the last week of March, when I ordered the car  – the brokers weren’t even advertising any discount at that point. It was only from mid April that these were starting to come through. I thought it would be a good 6 months after the initial buzz of the new GTI and GTD that these discounts were going to start to open up (as I had seen with the new Audi A3).

I got about £1000 off the car in lieu of a very modest discount and freebies, that seemed good at point of ordering considering other local dealers were looking to give no freebies and £500 less on my p/x. The difference between the lower end p/x value* and what I got was about £2200, so I consider myself about £3200 up (equivalent to some of the better discounts seen here). It would’ve been more like £2400 up if I had got my car when my dad got his.

* almost no-one achieves high p/x AND a top whack 10/11% discount at a dealer – they usually rob Peter to pay Paul on that score.

If your car could be considered more desirable than is the norm because it has a high extras value or is something a bit special like ED35 / Pirelli edition etc then I can see you getting more via the forums in a private sale than a dealer will p/x you. For my slightly rarer than average (but still relatively common) 170TDI Scirocco GT, I couldn’t see the specialised demand for it in a private sale.

I listed mine on my FaceBook profile, sold it within 24 hours, cash in hand for 3k more than the p/x value!

My JCW Mini was a great car, so much fun to drive! Here's a picture of it.
