Bought a Shed
« on: 14 October 2013, 22:41 »
Evening all I'm just wondering if there is anyone in or around Leicester who could plug my car into some diagnostic software and see if my car throws up any codes. I bought a 2000 TDI last week as I have just left my previous job and wanted something cheaper to run than my Fiesta ST and was going to sell that so I had money whilst looking for a new job. That plan has gone out the window as the Golf just wont run properly, it was okay when I took it for a test drive and was fine for the short 5 mile drive home but since then its been a nightmare and I cant sell the Fiesta till I get it running properly. Some of the issues are it will start fine when properly hot, when cold it will start but it just doesnt sound right as if it is miss firing on one cylinder and the idle will hunt and then die unless you keep the rpm over a thousand if you dont it will cut out. This leads to the next issue if it is at any temp between stone cold and properly hot it will just not restart. It will turn over fine but will make no attempt at all to fire, unless you keep cranking it for 10 seconds or so and even then it will take 3 or 4 attempts, its like there is no fuel. Since getting it I have serviced it including air, fuel and oil filters and after reading other threads I went and bought a genuine VW temp sensor and fitted but these have made no change. The next issue is once it warms up fully it runs okay and there seems to be plenty of power but it smokes badly (it doesnt seem to be blue or black as such). Im at a loss now Im sure its something simple but Im at a loss as to what else to try.

Cheers mate much appreciated, I do know coningsby and its not that far from Leicester just dont know if I would trust the car to get that far without the Police pulling me over due to the amount of smoke its kicking out. I got underneath today to check all the hoses to and from the intercooler and they look okay, but i know from reading up just cause they look okay doesnt mean they are but I dont think thats the issue as when you drive there is no drop in power and it will happily pull hard through the gears. I did notice there was a lot of oil round the turbo so I am wondering if its on its way out? or if its coming from higher up and running down onto the pipework. I think its one of 4 things causing the smoke, knackered turbo, camshaft and followers, fuel pump timing or as its only done 250 miles in the last 6 months and they were all by the previous owners mum who used it to do her nursing job driving to 10 different old people a day checking on them but each trip was only 5 minutes at a time. I'm thinking this may have just sooted everything up as the inside of the exhaust is black and oily so Im thinking that the rest of the exhaust is dripping in oil and maybe it just needs to be driven hard for a good few miles.

what engine is it? is the oil filler is on the passengers side or drivers side of the engine?
when you leave it for a bit to go cold and wont start, open up the bonnet before you start it up and check the clear fuel line between the fuel filter and the pump/fuel rail to see if theres any fuel in there. was the car warm when you went to buy it?
my one did something similar once (tdi 110 non pd) and it was the fuel pump timing retarded
i think i love you.....

Hi mate thanks for reply. The car is the 115 bhp version and the oil filter is at the front in the middle. When i went to see car it was stone cold so started okay and as i went for drive I missed the cutting out when lukewarm if I had left it ticking over for 5 or more minutes I would have found the fault but as I went for drive and didnt have to stop till fully warm i totally missed the issues. I did wonder about pump timing but need to find someone local who can plug it in and check.

ok itll be the pd model then, which rules out fuel pump timing as i dont think its adjustable.
were the glow plugs changed atall? also the fuel injector loom can die causing issues. are you able to hear the fuel pump prime itself? best thing to do though isget it scanned, then if no joy carry on from there
i think i love you.....

Yep its the PD model, I spoke to a private VW garage in Leicester today and they said it could possibly have a poor remap installed or even worse a tuning box. If there was a tuning box fitted where would it be installed, they said to check the fuel temp sensor in the fuel line and the connector that plugs into the wiring loom that goes into the head but it doesnt look like anything has been added, is there anywhere else one would be added.

try looking around the maf for any extra connectors or anything. not too sure other than that! it might no make any difference, but try unplugging the maf sensor and see if that makes any difference. other than that, check all the vacum pipes for leaks, cleck/clean  or replace the air filter too. another long shot would be disconnect the battery for half hour to attempt resetting the ecu

I have removed loads of stuff under the bonnet today and traced all wiring coming from sensors on engine to see if there was a tuning box anywhere but had no luck. All filters have been changed when i serviced it last sunday, have tried running it with MAF disconnected but made no difference, other than the MAF what else affects the fuel air ratio as it is definetley overfueling?

the only other thing i can think of it being, is camshaft timing might be a tooth out or something. i think you can also fine tune the timing with the aid of vag com, but this might only be true on the non pd versions. the only other thing that would play with your fuel ratios is if a fuel pump packed up. have u had it code read yet?
