Auxilliary Heater
« on: 10 October 2013, 09:28 »

Few weeks ago I took delivery of m new GTD.

Readijg through the manual I come across the section on the "Auxilliary Heater" but I can't work out if my car has one or not. I certainly don't have the remote control nor can I see where to set it up in the nav menu..

I had a look through the brochure and there is no mention of it as standard on the GTD or a mention of it being an option.

I seen someone elses post about it but it didn't really conclude anything.

Any thoughts??

Cheers

Mike

As Peter says, it's only available in colder climates where you might need to warm the interior before setting off.

If you get the Auxilliary Heater, you will get an extra, smaller, key fob for turning the heater on/off. And somewhere in the menus you can set a timer for it.. Haven't gotten my car yet so can't say where it is supposed to be.

I had an Eberspacher heater in my old T4 van.
It had a timer that I set to come on at 7:00 every morning, 15 minutes before I had to go to work.

It was great, nice and toasty with defrosted windows, not sure it would be worth it in a new car though.

Don't forget that all diesel models for a number of years now, have a built in 1kw electric heater built into the heater matrix. Whilst it won't help with defrosting much, it does get warm air out quicker.

When the climate temperature setting is above about 85% of maximum heat, and the ambient temperature is below (I think) 5°C, then the unit switches on automatically and heats up the cold coolant passing through it to not only give you warmer air in the cabin within minutes (which it does very effectively), but also help the engine warm up quicker.

The GTD still has one of these.

1KW heater? that only leaves me with 134KW to power the car.

I think the axillary heater in this part of the world refers to the additional heater (on the heater matrix?) for the car's interior that is definitely fitted to the GTD. It's not the same thing as what's referred to above, fitted to Scandinavian cars.

A diesel takes a lot longer than petrol to get up to operating temp, so on a cold morning you'd be freezing your ass off for miles before the heater would be of any use. The auxiliary heater compensates for this. It was in my MK6 GTD and the cabin used to get warm very quickly on a cold morning as a result.
