Rear brake caliper refurb
« on: 09 October 2013, 11:03 »
Has anyone stripped and refurbed their rear brake calipers, I'm in the middle of mine but can't seem to remove the handbrake lever, do I need to remove the circlip from underneath where the piston is? Also does anyone know what the circlip in the back of the piston holds in? Reluctant to remove it incase there are springs etc..
Thanks in advance
James

In all honesty, don't bother.  They'll sieze up at some point and be of no use.

Try either Mk3 or 2wd non-Anniversary Mk4 items, as they use the same discs, pads and carriers, but work a lot better.

yep i agree i wouldn't bother refurbishing the mk2 calipers matey, im swapping mine for mk4 rear calipers this weekend they are aluminum and wont seize up on you its a easy job you keep your carriers, pads and discs and only require the mk4 calipers and conversion hoses you can buy them from goodridge online or if you call Hel performance they will do you a pair with a choice of stainless steel lines in any color for £35.00, so cheaper then goodridge and i hear goodridge are prone to splitting anyway, mine should be with me tomorrow.

Hope this helps matey there are threads that take you through the conversion if your unsure

Yeah, I have read the conversion is a good idea, I'm refurbing mine as a technical exercise really, I got the circlip out now and have mine down to component parts now, bathing in perklone overnight to loosen the brake dust. The handbrake mech had seized due to the seal failing so I've bought a new seal kit.
