Golf mk4 gear knob
« on: 05 October 2013, 21:22 »
Hi have the gti with the horrible wooden interior and have sprayed all the dash trim satin black (looks lush)

just wondering what I can do about the gear knob? I don't want to buy one of the crappy £5 ones off eBAy as it'll be awful. Wondering about peoples experiences and what they've found is the best solution? I.e. One off another car that will go straight on or an aftermarket one that isn't too much trouble to fit.

thanks

Ive got one of the cheap ones aswell and it is so much better than i was expecting. It does feel abit cheap imo but the fit is really good and it does look so much better than the original

I've got a momo one in mine but that's only because I got it really cheap. Otherwise I'd have one like Dom's.

I've just bought a mk4 with the wood trim. It's seen better days and isn't great looking anyway. How did you get them off and what did you do with them?

Thanks

The part around the air con and other dials will just come out with a flat head screwdriver and so will the bit underneath that.
The drinks tray I forced in my head unit keys and it comes right out. Although I'm sure I've seen a few better guides on YouTube. The ashtray part all you have to do is slide it open, lift out the ashtray part and undo the torque screw that you see, lift it all out and pull out the wire (connecting the lighter) now, the only hard bit is on the left and right.
I heard they are supposed to slide out but I can't find a video anywhere that has succeeded. So I just pulled them out and superglued them back in.
Once I had all my bits I cleaned them up with some alcohol rubs and gave them a coat of white primer, left them 24hours and then whacked a coat of satin black on them and it's worked a treat!

No problem. Don't be scared to give things a little pull, I found that some of it was in fairly tight as no one had messed with it before. Let me know how you get on :)

I made mine from a mk2 Golf gear knob I won on ebay for £9 then made the adapter on a lathe from aluminum. I'd probably go for a Beetle Sport knob if I had the money.

Here's mine:
