new front windscreen needed - HELP
« on: 05 October 2013, 09:04 »
hi all

as the title suggests, i need to get a new front windshield for the GTI.  The one that's on has been f***ed by scratches here and there and it really pisses me off to see these little spots while driving.

Has anyone fitted a new windscreen?  Cost?  Is it a long procedure?  Does it have any adverse effects on the car in terms of insulation / noise etc?

thanks
Wife's: mk8 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr atlantic blue, DSG, Norfolk 17", pan s/r, leds
Now: mk7.5 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr tornado red, DSG, Singapore 17", pan s/r, leds
Before: mk6 GTI 5dr candy white, DSG, Monza Shadow 18", s/r, bi-Xenons, DCC
Even before that: mk5 GT 5dr tornado red, manual, s/r

Better of claiming on your insurance, if you can damage it.

If not your probably looking at around the £300 mark.

Doesn't take them long to replace at all, but once its replaced make sure your surrounding bodywork isnt damaged, check it doesnt leak water in, and also make sure if it doesnt get condensated now, that it doesnt after its been replaced.

Oh boy sounds like a real pain ... Sure it's annoying to see as it is but I'd hate it to cause damage to the car or leak water in...  I may consider replenishing it then but down here i am not sure i can find anyone who can do such a job...

Get some CarPro Ceri glass polish, and really work at it with a Microfibre applicator.

You will see the water stains etc dissapear as you polish, but really does take some working in.

Failing that if you have a DA polisher you can machine polish it, with the same polish and a certain pad for glass.

After that seal it with a glass sealant.

Be much easier to polish it than replace it, if your worried about damage and leaks.

appreciate your help mate, i was only wondering, is what you suggest only for watermarks?  my windshield is full of small spots here and there caused by small rocks and/or by screen wipers.

The chips you can't do anything with as it's taken chunks out of the glass, it will just solve scratches.

Detailing clay will shift the water marks. It worked wonders on our shower screen the other day. Cilit Bang Lime and Grime? Pah, Barry Scott can shout all he likes.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I had my windscreen replaced by Autowindscreens, no problems at all, no damage (well apart from cutting my hands free mic wire. It just looks like a VW one with out the VW logo.
