Bit of advice for a Seat Ibiza 1.2?
« on: 04 October 2013, 17:44 »
My gf has a 10 plate Ibiza with 37k on the clock which is playing up a bit.
The other day she let petrol get quite low so stuck in £40.
The next day the emissions control light came on and the car was being quite sluggish, I started it after work and after revving the engine revs dropped to about 500, a couple of times it cut out.
I imagined it might be sediment in the fuel line etc.

She took it to a garage who apparently did some diagnostics and said the cam sensor had gone so they replaced it.
I gave them a call to find out more because she didnt do a very good job of explaining it to me!
They then said they need it longer as they might have to replace the cam chain which is worn down and starting to slip, which I imagine is an expensive job they'd love to do!

But I wasn't convinced so I rang a Seat stealer, he said the 1.2 engine cam chain should never have to be replaced, and if it does start slipping it'll be really rattly and shake itself to death before the chain slips and the engine is gone, And the symptoms I explained to match up to the supposed fault.

Im not sure what to do at all, the gf is torn as she cant afford the repairs but doesn't want to drive as the garage said it couldn't be driven.
Where do I stand with the garage where the car is now, if they've already changed the cam sensor and want to strip the engine to replace the chain, would she just pay them off for what they've done and take it to a specialist to get a proper diagnostic done?

Anyone come across something like this before?

I've heard of this problem very recently, but wasn't paying attention to what was actually being said!
Jist I think is 1.2s playing up because of Supermarket fuel, and the engines need a proper spanking to clear the system out... Lady owner cars seem to be suffering, more than others because of the nature of how they are driven!

Remedy would be to get the car sorted, and use decent fuel, and take for a thrashing once a week!

I'll see if I can find out more.

Cheers Thom!

If you saw this car you would cringe. She got her passenger door T boned in a car park, but she forgot to tax and MOT her car so didn't go through insurance so just left it.

I couple of weeks later her door was open in a car park and a mate tried pulling up next to her and bent the door the wrong way. Now there's a nice pop every time to door opens

By getting it sorted though, do you mean paying to get the chain replaced even though myself and the dealership are a bit dubious about it?

I would be highly surprised if the cam chain needed replacing at under 40k!
I cant find out more till tomorrow, when I'm back at work, so not sure what "sorting" actually means at the moment

I would get that car away from whichever garage has it pronto. there is way to much of this guesswork aka diagnosis going on these days. take it to someone with a brain.

I need to get my tin hat out! New diesels with DPF need thrashing, now petrols need thrashing, yet government makes more laws regarding driving... You know what I'll stick with my mk4 and bomb proof AGU, sod buying a new car as I'm sure Mr. Plod won't hesitate to give me points for saying the petrol engine or diesel DPF needs some abusing to fix the car.

building a rolling road  for a custome for pritty much these reasons.

they need to give the cars some work  but cant really go thrashing customers cars round on the roads.  so building them a rolling road ( it dosent measure power or anything  ) mainly uses the power from the car to drive a f**king big fan and a water brake.
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
