Door Lock Barrels...............
« on: 20 August 2005, 13:50 »
Does anybody know if it's possible to take the bits from one lock barrel and put them in another? Reason I ask is that my door lock has had an encounter with a screwdriver so the outer bit looks a bit worse for wear. I have another lock barrel that I got from the scrapyard, but when I tried to get the outer bit off the only think that happened was all the key "pins" fell out.................Are these bits the only transferable parts?

yeah it can be done, but you have to be sure that you don;t lose all the little rings inside, they have the grooves on them that the key fits into, i think they are numbered and you put the numbers in the right order to suit your key or something, can be fiddly job!

i need to sort my barrel out too... tis the 2nd time a screwdriver has been in my door lock in the past 2 months! argh.. bloomin chavs!!

You can prise the chrome finisher off and replace it with your scrappie item. Just use a liittle aradite to secure it into place. If the innards beyond the finisher have been damaged as well then this tip is of much use to you as it would be to a blind Tibetan monk who had undertaken a vow of  travelling solely on foot.

I think the inside bits are ok as the lock still works with the key. I was trying to get the chrome bit off yesterday but it seemed impossible. It appears to be attached in four places where the metal is bent inwards but couldn't prise them out the other way.........maybe I just wasn't doing it right..........

Hold the barrell in mole grips or a vice and hit around the the edge with a hammer and small bladed screw driver or chisel. It will come off

You have 2 options, either swap the passenger lock into the driver side or swap all the lock pins over to one from a scrappy:

Take the door handle off, and remove the screw from the end of the lock barrel.  The locking finger will come off and you should be able to pull the lock barrel out, it can help to put the key into the lock when you do it.  At this stage you can just swap your passenger one into the driver side & screw it all back together, job done.

If you want to swap the pins over so both locks work:

Lay the lock down on a clean flat surface preferably in a well lit area so you can see what you're doing.  Carefully remove each lock fingers one by one, along with the 2 tiny springs.  Make sure you lay them out carefully in the right order on your clean flat surface so you can put em back in the replacement cylinder exactly the way they came out :)
Next get the replacement cylinder, give it a good clean out then insert the springs & lock fingers cleaning em as you go.  Don't use any grease as the locks will work better without.  If all goes well you should be able to put your key in, the pins will retract and you can then reinsert the lock into your door handle.

If you decide to just swap the passenger lock onto the drivers side, you could then fit central locking & delock the passenger handle for a clean look, to achieve this simply get a rear door handle, and swap the triger finger over.  The finger is held in place with a roll pin, just knock this out swap the fingers over and reinstall the roll pin. :)
