mk2 golf cl 4+E

hello im new to the forum and i have just upgraded from my mk4 tdi to a mk2 golf 1.6 cl 4+E, it has a gti rear axle on as well as the gti rear hubs.

it still has drums on the back so im wanting to uprate the brakes as im putting a piper cam in and twinning up the carbs.

 i was wondering how i would go about changing the drums to discs is it difficult or not???

i doubt it has a GTI rear axle if it has drums on it. otherwise someone went to the hassle of swapping over the rear stub axles to run the drums again!

only difference i cant think off between GTI rear axle & std rear axle is the incorporated rear anti roll bar

anyhow, to answer your question the easiest way is to get a complete rear axle including disc's & calipers, and replace your existing one. cheapest/easiest option

and its your front brakes you should really be upgrading, theyll be piddly 239mm discs

Probably solid discs too so even GTi 8v spec brakes would be an improvement.

thanks guys well i will upgrade them too gti discs at front first and then to discs on back. i was just saying what the guy told me but i do suspect he is wrong like you said.

Swap the stub axles over for some with discs would be the easiest..... question is whether you need to?  I have Golf3 TDI with 256mm front discs and drums on the back and that pulls up OK. 

You will also need to check to see if you have a compensator in the rear as the Golf2 needs very little rear braking effort and just putting discs on without a compensator will give too much rear braking force when the back of it is empty, leading to rears locking before fronts and unfortunate consequences.  Just ask LazyLunatic on here. 

'twinning up the carbs' eh? Does that entail putting a twin-choke Weber on, or something that is more involved (and above the exhaust manifold)?

to twin up the carbs its not a difficult job really you need to link them up via a beam across from where the choke cable attaches and then it attahcs on to the beam or it does with weber carbs Su carbs are different as of there design. thanks for that its a nice car but i want it mint but will take time when ive done ill put before and after photos on.

Stupid idea, unless you're going to put a cross-flow head on it from a late 1.6 or 2.0 8V motor.

You'll be putting the carbs and intake for them over the exhaust manifold on the current head, which also has smaller ports than the 8V GTI or the crossflow motor.  You're on to a loser with your plan, sorry.

Crossflow head and bike carbs would make more sense or go the whole hog and ABF it.
