why not? more side wall gives better bad weather handling, more pliant over pot holes and cheaper tyres.

Vw 16"steels with 205/55/16 vredestein snowtrac 3's
It was unstoppable last winter and the wheels/tyres as a set were about same as the cost of 1 OEM Shadow monza.
Well worth doing. I passed a few folk with 4x4 cars who were struggling on summer tyres. mine will go back on in November.

link below is useful regarding sizes, offsets and speed ratings

http://www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/fileadmin/pdf/prospekte/2012/WKR_2012_engl.pdf

not ran winters on either of the Golf as my old 500 was shod with winters

my Polo will be running on Michelin Alpin A4s (wanted a H rating given wife's right foot) on 15" Steel Alcar KFZ rims which are all TUV approved

in reality i have a set of Pirelli alloys in need of a refurb so if we need a set of winters for the mk5 we are covered

Bought a set of Conti winter tyres last year but couldn't afford to buy winter wheels as well so I stuck them on the Monzas. Did a good job even on 18s.
Getting the Monzas refurbed soon so they're going to remain as summer wheels only in the future. I'm buying a set of Team Dynamics Imolas for winter this year. Reasonably priced, BBS look alikes so they won't look too embarassing and will do the job for the 2 or 3 months they're on.

I got a set of Monza 17" of Gumtree for £120 and run them with Dunlop Winter Sport 4D

The Monza 2's are then kept in the garage and kept away from the salt.

Amazing grip in the wet at low temperatures will probably put them on at the end of the month.
Snow performance last year was amazing, I live well out in the country and wouldn't have got home without them.
