Brother was looking to do a service on his newly purchased VR6. I ordered in the parts for him after a bit of contact from on here (FAQ section).

ECP suggested the oil filter was a cartridge, eBay suggested canister. This forum said cartridge & so on we went with that.

His car is an R-plated (1997) VR6.

Anyway, it seemed that carparts4less look to be under the EuroCarParts umbrella (similar to Admiral, Elephant, Diamond etc), selling the same parts but cheaper. I put his reg into the website, it returned some cartridge results & the purchase was made.

He drains his oil today (strangely enough, research suggests a capacity of 6L. The oil was at minimum on the dipstick (so you're thinking 5L) yet it didn't even come close to filling a 5L drum.

He comes to change the filter ...... problem ....... the filter is the wrong one!!!!

That is the filter that was sent out. He said on the filter that is fitted, the hole is much bigger .... it extends to where my thumbnail is pointing in the photo & as such this filter will not fit.

So he had to re-fit the old filter, which had ripped, with view to changing it for a new one ASAP.

Any chance he's got this wrong? Or have carparts4less/EuroCarParts got it wrong?

On the topic of which, is their returns policy any good? He had gloves on & was doing the oil change - as such his hands were dirty which resulted in the new filter getting oil on the packaging & a bit on the filter, but not a lot. There was only one way to find out whether it was correct or not.

As a knock on of this, he's now bothered about changing the fuel filter in case that's been sent out wrong!

Fuel filters are the same design by default so I wouldn't expect any trouble there.

Oil filters, I have the one you picture, on my Feb95 engine. as far as I am aware there are two cartridge items and one metal type oil filter.

Returning a dirty component that you ordered incorrectly without checking? Personally, I'd say that you can try but i wouldn't expect much.

VW part number is 021 115 562 A for cross reference, earlier VR6 are same without the A so that might be your difference there, both made by Hengst like the one you have so they've probably given you the wrong age filter.

Give them that number and see where you get with that, always go into parts places so you can at least look at things first when you collect, might not always help 100% but it's better than online ordering!

As for oil capacity, engines always take less than stated due to the filter holding a decent amount you won't of measured and all the little bits that just get stuck inside, they all add up quite a bit so don't worry about that too much
