clifford alarm fob not programmed?

hi all,
i have a mk3 cabrio which has a clifford alarm with a fob with 2 buttons. last night my bag was stolen with my keys in but luckily i have a spare key and key fob, problem is it hasnt had a battery in for a long time and when i put a new battery in it the LED lights up but nothing happens. Not sure if it needs to be programmed or whatever?
I used to work my central locking too so really need it to work!
Any ideas?

I would just buy a new car because there is someone out there who could just stroll on up and take off with it anyway.

It depends on the situation of where it was stolen, if it was local i think i might consider a new set of locks but if i thought there wasn't much chance of them finding the car then i'd get in touch with clifford and see what they say?

god im worried now.
i didnt think there was much chance of them knowing which vw the key belonged to but ive just thought they also nicked my phone which has photos of my car 
i really cant afford to get the locks changed and there is an immobilizer on the car as the key has the chip inside. Is changing the door locks a hard job? perhaps i could just change the door locks myself and get a steering lock?
i have emailed clifford, not had a reply yet. from what ive found out on google i need a valet code for the alarm but i also cant find a keypad anywhere to put in this code so im a bit stuck.
what a kerfuffle! at least i think my car is quite safe outside my house as I live in a remote tucked away sorta place.

i only have TPFT insurance and i read through and it does say if my keys are stolen they will pay up to £100 towards the cost of replacement locks... the only problem is the theft excess is £100 so what on earth is the point in this cover?
