DSG GEARBOX QUESTION
« on: 27 September 2013, 20:20 »
Hi, I am still the proud owner of a 2012 gti with dsg box, was just wondering if it is just my vehicle that does this irritating thing or is other DSG boxes the same. Whilst driving through multi storey car-parks if I have the gearbox in auto D, car never seems to select first gear as is needed to drive slowly on the up ramps , it always remains in second and struggles. If you have the window down you can hear some strange noises coming from gearbox . But if I change gear manually and select first gear the car drives and sounds so much healthier. Anybody else noticed this or is it part of the norm with this gearbox?.

I thought 1st gear was just to get you in motion.Ive never noticed anything out of the ordinary with my DSG but I'm sure it's not in 1st in a multi-storey but 2nd.

Mine ends to stay in second at much lower speeds than I would if it was a manual. If you come off the throttle and let it creep, will it select first itself then?
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I've never noticed any odd sounds but I know what you mean about it being a bit sluggish going up multi story ramps, and in Drive it does only change down into first when you're virtually at a stop.   I find  normal Drive mode changes up too quickly and Sport mode changes up a tad too slowly and gets very growly - ok if you're on your own in the car.

I drive mine quite differently when in manual.

Im guessing its programming for the reason the early boxes in the mk5 and audis were known to drop to first when approaching a roundabout for example making it very jerky. So I presume this is how they fixed it. Its always going to be a compromise.

Thanks for replys, good to know mine is not the only one that does this , going up a ramp at approx. 5 miles per hour is a struggle for 2nd gear with 2 people in car :undecided:. I think from now on I will tackle the multi storeys with the car in manual mode so I can then select 1st myself and spare the groans of the car struggling in 2nd.
