« on: 19 August 2005, 17:44 »
hi all im new to vw's and this site after a bit of advise i brought a 2002 golf 1.8t gti with 52000 miles with fvwsh,
called my local vw dealer to ask when timing belt needs changing and they told me to get it checked at 60k and change it at 120k now i know vw are good but they cant be that good or can they?
also the gti badge on the back hasn't got the red i any idea if this is normal or maby the last owner had to have a  new 1 put on, the car is hpi clear and def not a import as got the receipt from new. and are they easy enought to change.

many thanks in advance si

Hi. my local VAG dealer told me that there is no specific mileage to change the cambelt, they just check it each time it goes in for a service.

My cars a 2001 Y reg Three door model and does not have the red 'I' badge either.

yeah checked at anouther dealer today and they check the belt on every service and the recomend milage to change is 120K so will get it checked as due 4 service in 3K and take it from there but they only charge £270 inc tensinor so i think thats good un less some one can recomend some one else

good price that really for a belt and tensioner change, just make sure they change the idler pulley (£20 ish from vw) as this can fail also, whilst its in bits get em to change the water pump too (£30 ish on exchange basis)  then you know youve got many a mile ahead with loads of thrashing with out any trouble, id hate to see any one go through the same trouble i went through when me cambelt tensioner pulley and idler pulley fooked up..........

Gaz

been there done that and rebuilt me self, get it done before it happens,......

I'd get your timing belt done at least before 80K, and get it checked from 60K. As kniterider says, better safe than sorry (and he knows from experience!!)
