8v is a non interference head so no worries there, will do dynamic timing tomorrow when I can get a extra hand. Starting to think that that noise is the manifold blowing.

could be a collapsed hydraulic tappet. is it a constant noise or intermittent? if its an inlet manifold leak it will run like crap until you thrash it then at higher revs it will be fine. had same problem myself after painting the head and then the paint melted and the gasket basically slid in to the port lol.

Redone the static timing but the engine is running funny when trying to do dynamic timing. It struggles to rev to 2.5k and then the revs jump to red line causing the engine to overheat before it can be timed. The co may be well out but the exhaust has decided to blow at every join. Manifold has a crack I assume causing the noise so that has to come off today, as it's a 4 branch I'm going to try to remove it with the inlet still attached. Once the exhaust is sorted will attempt the dynamic timing again and will take it to a garage to get the mix set correctly using a co reader. A lot of work but hopefully this will sort it once and for all.
