I think I ordered the wrong car
« on: 24 September 2013, 14:20 »
Waiting on a 3dr Manual GTI, which will be epic when it finally arrives, very much looking forward to driving what I thought would be my dream spec.  Post order I drove a manual and it was brilliant.

HOWEVER, since last week I have been driving a courtesy wait-longer-than-20-weeks-car-from-VW, and it is a 5 door DSG (diesel, but makes no difference).

The DSG works so well with the auto handbrake, stop start and ADC, it really is very relaxing and easy to drive. And the 5 door works really well with getting the kids in etc.

Dont get me wrong, I've had 3 door cars with kids before and it is fine, in fact in many ways it works well.  BUT, right now, it all seems to be working so well as a 5 door I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts.

My car is due end september/early october, and it is built, so no chance of changing spec.

Just hope I have made the right decision and a manual works ok.

Has anyone got any experience of driving both manual and DSG, with the stopstart and ADC?  Is manual any better?

3dr Manual in Pure White with PP, Dynaudio, Nav and Keyless. Oh and a service pack.

I've driven both, and I have a manual.  The stop start stuff works a treat and the hill hold/auto handbrake feature is brilliant.  Honestly, you don't need to worry!

As an aside, I got 3 doors as IMO it looks better - however, I have a 5 year old and given we've been using my car for obvious reasons it is a pain not having 5 doors.  However, this is outweighed by the looks so I'll deal with it!

When I was a kid i remember it being quite fun clambering in the back and being in my little cocoon. I also think a 3 door feels like a sportier car when you are in the back because of the way you are hugged by the side wrapping around. 3 dr is not a bad thing unless you carry granny around in the back every day.

Better check the back of your car in case you've forgotten to let granny out and she's still in there!!!

Manual all the way! I love mine and i have tested both manual and dsg back to back. You just feel so much more involved as a driver, especially when you get an awesome gear change or a sweet downshift using heal and toe

It's down to tuning your brain in ,to what you have , 3 door I agree looks cooler ,and I prefer the additional front
access being tall , rear access is just patience  .
Manual V DSG and stop start ,I think DSG works better ,some situations changing down on a manual (coasting into
my drive while changing down ) and it cuts out ,then starts when I want to shufty down a bit !!!! so I switch it off ,
won't when my DSG arrives though .
General DSG V manual ,It's personal really , the last 4 VW Golf I have had Mk5 GTI (man ) R32 DSG , R DSG ,and
the GTI coming DSG , If you drive a DSG properly it's the Mutts Nuts , but any of these cars in manual is great,
and you can do some racing bits as well .
Mind an R32 coming down the box in manual DSG (the computer pre revs the engine on downshift ) from 100 plus ,
was voted one of the top ten car sounds of all time ,and while the neighbours hated it ,my Labrador (called ENZO )
new i was home
So you didn't order the wrong car it's what suits ,and how you drive and adapt to it , and after 200 golfs the last
10 privately owned ,you will love it ,unless there is something wrong with you or you are a strange shape

Heel and toe in a drive by wire car??? That confuses the hell out of the computers. In the Mk2 however...
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Seems to work well in the 7. As long as you get over the overly sensitive brake pedal it's fine

Is the DSG in the GTD tuned to upshift quicker in order to make use of the torque? No point going above 4k revs and losing the torque
