Maps of Cyprus on the Satnav?
« on: 24 September 2013, 14:08 »
Just finalising the order on my GTI and was going to get the basic nav, however I suddenly thought, what is the point of having the nav when the car will be in Cyprus for the first couple of years of it's life and very few satnavs have maps of Cyprus on them. It would be a full UK spec car so would have whatever maps come on a UK car. So the question is, does the VW nav have Cyprus maps on it?

If they don't, I'd best look to rejig my order - might have to add some other options to fill the £700 lol!! (or make it cheaper, but that's a lot less fun!)

If it doesn't have the maps you can add them yourself.

I've just gone out of the car for you and checked on my Discover Nav pro, and no, Cyprus isn't included in the European maps I'm afraid.

Thanks for that, at least I know not to waste £700 on it!

Might just get a decent Satnav package on my phone (or even buy one when I get back to the UK) but deffo not worth the money if I can't use it for 50% of the cars life with me.

Thanks again.

Yes, going through EMC Tax free - found out today it's going to cost me 500 Euros to register it over here, compared to 150 if I register it before Jan 1st.

Definitely got to get rid of the VXR, I heard a rumour today that for cars with over 180g/km of emissions, I will need to pay 8 Euros per gram - the VXR currently puts out 220 grams - meaning 1760 Euros road tax per year!!

yes, registration fees change after january 1st, not sure about whether the emissions thing will apply retrospectively then or for cars bought after a certain date only.  In any case, hope you get your GTI on the roads soon, they surely make an impression down here as not so many are around.

Thanks again.

I have a Nokia Lumia, the free sat nav is excellent (Here Maps)
Its worldwide, links into the phones search function and stores the maps on the phone.

I would definitely recommend it.

Try the free satnav app for your phone Waze.  It's been bought by Google recently, it's a social gps app so you report incidents etc.  Pretty cool and better than Google/Apple  maps standalone.
