Every now and then when I hit the accelerator on my 1.8T the car seems to slow down, not speed up.  There appears to be no real pattern to when this happens - speed, ambient temperature etc....  Any ideas gratefully received.  Thanks in advance.  Dave.

intermittent maf fault probably. if it does it at idle, get a mate to check for smoke when you rev it... a quick search here in the mk4 section should answer any questions.

Hi there. I own a 2001 1.8T20v and i am new to this web-site.

My car had a similar kind of problem when moving in slow traffic. When gently accelerating away the car would sometimes slow and then surge forward. I learnt to drive around the problem for a while (giving it more revs to pull away) but in March this year the engine management light came on. My local VAG dealer removed and cleaned the throttlebody and renewed the airmass meter (whatever that is!) VAG part No 06A906461LX £75.10 plus labour charges.

Since then the car has been a joy to drive.

air mass meter = MAF

exactly the same happened to mine, and probably about 80% of all other mk4 owners.

MAF = Mass Air Flow. Come on toph ;)

Basically senses how much air is entering the engine. Usually you have one just after the air filter on a NA engine. The 20vT has another on the throttle body to make sure everything's running spot on.

 Fap me!  I didn't realise my little mota had so much poke.  Replaced the MAF and it now drives 100% better than it ever has.  Thanks for the steer in the right direction guys.  And a big thanks to Chris at Mill VW (Northeast) for knockin' the VAT of the MAF - £70 exchange.  Best 70 quid I've spent in a long time.
