the best thing you could ever do to an engine is make sure the oil is to the max an then take it out and redline it through the box a couple of times. if its weak it will explode. if its strong it will improve.

It's only done 40k miles so the engine should hopefully be fine. I'm wondering if the garage i've gone to to have it filled up put the best oil in (i know they said they put in synthetic oil but not sure of anything else..? If they didn't put in the best oil then maybe this would make it go sooner? .. anyways.. I had my service less than 6 months ago and nothing showed up on the diagnostics test.
Im about to buy some oil for when it happens again. Halfords are showing three brands for my car that they sell, which is the best?

Halfords 5W30 Fully Synthetic VW/Audi Oil
 Castrol Edge 5W30 Oil
 Mobil 1 ESP 5W/30 Oil

Mobil 1 I would go with.

I honestly doubt it will get better mate so keep a eye on the level.

I've probably thrashed just about every single car I've bought and not had a single one blow up after a bit of redline?

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

With every single car ive had the more miles its done the more oil it uses.

Well the 1.8t Skoda I had with 120k on it never used a drop in the time I had it, the Astra is on 86k and in the 1400miles I have done in it no oil has been needed.

All the cars I have had in most cases were 70k plus and have never used oil to a big degree and daft as it seems I check my oil and all levels every weekend.

The older stuff I had did need the odd top up but newer stuff tends to be a lot better.

Mobil1 it is! I'll get it ordered. I don't mind it going every few months as long as there is nothing wrong with the engine etc. It's a slight pain to fill it up but nothing major.
