people never really post about things going well or getting better they just happily drive them about.
the 2.0 crossflow 8 valve motor can be heavy on oil, they seem to be the enigne that get lumberds with short runs and pooteling about as anyone who was going to drive it hard bought the 1.8T.
sometimes they will inprove by been driven and good serviceing, other motors will just use more and more oil as time goes on. there is a know piston ring issue with them.
the mk3 enigne will often respond well to some carefully aministerd abuse.
mk2 motors PB and KR were well know for not setteling there rings for many miles unless they were given some hammer.
tweed - after 10 / 15 k oil consumption should have stoped but dosent allways. if the enigne was never given enough load when it was fresh it takes a very long time for them to stop burning oil,
i rebuilt a tractor enigne some years ago once it was all finished minion was soposed to connect it up to water pump to give it a few hours of sensible work before giveing it to the vandals, anyway minion got distracted by something and left it ideling by the pump all day. that never did it any favors hell that engine can get through some oil. it's slowly getting better but i'll die before it's right as someone will run it out of oil and there be a rod through the side no dought
