mk5 gti DSG - rattle sound from engine bay
« on: 23 September 2013, 15:07 »
Hi,

I have only just got my car and so far I really like it.
The one thing I have noticed though is that there is a rattling sound from the engine bay area when either letting off or just idling the engine.
If I apply some acceleration to the car it is fine, sound goes away.

Any ideas? is it normal? doen't seem to effect the drive at all.

Edit: I have just read on another forum that the type of fuel used can cause these symptoms (the fuel pump is making the sound) and using 98 ron solved the noise/rattle. I will try this tonight (the car is currently sitting with a small amount of 95ron in it)

Was your car bought from a Garage or Private sale?

You could have the car scanned and looked over and then take these results to the supplying garage and have it covered under warranty if it's faulty.

I have done that today, I took it to a Vw indy garage this morning and they think the sound is coming from the cat.
I told this to the delear and they don't want to know so looks like I am going to have to go to trading standards for this one. so much for 3months warranty!!!

Any idea how much a new cat is on these? my VW indy thinks alot because there is two of them. Is there a alternative or anything?

There's 3 cats on the GTI.

The pre-cat is only installed for start up emissions so has no bearing on a current MOT. You could remove this first and see if it removes the rattle? Will improve performance a little too.

If the car did need replacement Cats I would just put an aftermarket exhaust on with a sports cat, be interesting to see a comparison of costs.

Is the warranty supplied by the garage or is it one of these AA or RAC warranties flogged by the garage? Read the Terms carefully, they can't just tell you to get lost if it's in the policy.

It was supplied by the garage. It was the cat nearest to the engine, is this one? Would a exhaust shop do this for me, removing the pre cat? Do you know if it will leave warning lights on the car?

Well a tuner would knock it out, that's how mine was and many others have been removed.

The emissions test is done when the car is warm so the pre-cat is null.

Should not throw an error code.

Hard to say but it won't cost a lot to remove or inspect.

Who knows, it might not even be in situ .
