My first VW - and loving it!
« on: 20 September 2013, 21:12 »
Hi all

Just got a tornado red GTI Mk6 DSG. I've never owned a VW before, but back in May my wife bought a Golf Mk6 1.4 Match DSG and it so exceeded my expectations that I decided to see what its big brother was like.

It too exceeded my expectations in some areas. Coming from 2 previous BMWs, both with well over 300bhp, I was suprised at how quick it was - to the point that I thought it must be mapped. I'm sure it can't be, as it's an approved used VW car!

Fuel consumption was also a pleasant surprise, matching the 1.4 TSI at 40mpg on a steady motorway run, and approaching 30mpg around town.

1 or 2 issues to get sorted. The MD Interface seems to be dead, and there's not even a 'Media-in' soft button on the RCD 510 screen (strange?)

I'm sure there'll be lots of info on here from some very knowledgeable people, and I look forward to joining in the chat!

Welcome to the forum

Post your specific queries in the mk6 section and no doubt you'll get some answers.  What options exactly are you getting on screen on the rcd510?

What options exactly are you getting on screen on the rcd510?

When I press 'Media', across the top of the screen I get CD / SD CARD / AUX.

There's also no charging output (5v) from the MDI, so presumably no input either.

The bluetooth pairs to my phone (HTC Wildfire), but won't connect, says 'not compatible', but the phone works fine in my wife's Golf.

The car is booked in Monday at VW Southend, so hopefully they can shed some light.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious (not sure what you've tried) but have you physically connected your phone/iPod/ via either the MDI port inside the armrest or via the aux-in connection (front of armrest)?

My rcd510 has 4 soft buttons at top of screen: CD/SD/MEDIA/BT AUDIO.  The latter being Bluetooth audio which should stream music wirelessly from a compatible phone.   Ipods/mp3 players need to be plugged into the MDI port, which also charges the device.

Hopefully they'll be able to sort it on Monday.  What year is the car? Maybe it just needs a firmware update which your dealer should do for you.

Yes, I've connected a USB stick through the adapter cable to to port in the armrest, but nothing happens, and no button on screen for MEDIA or BT AUDIO

The car is a 59 plate. When I bought it the dealer agreed to have F & R parking sensors fitted for me, using a 'retro-fitting' company that carries out this type of work for them. Maybe they've left something disconnected in the wiring. But that still wouldn't explain the lack of options on the screen. Hope it's not some Chinese Ebay special fitted by the previous owner!

Pretty sure Bluetooth phone prep only came in on later models so maybe you don't have it?  That might explain the phone issue and the lack of BT audio.  It can be retrofitted but might require coding with VCDS.  There's a few threads on here about it.    Hope you manage to get it sorted.
