Parking brake/hill-hold failure
« on: 20 September 2013, 17:53 »
Mid journey home tonight I got the warning "bing" followed by amber messages in my MFD "hand brake system failure" and "hill-hold system failure", whilst going up a small hump (overpass for metro station). An amber "!" in a triangle then appeared at the bottom of the dash and stayed there the whole journey. Luckily the rest of my journey is relatively flat. Start-stop stoppages didn't reset the system.

Once home I turned the ignition off and back on again and the fault was gone. Had a quick drive around the block and I was satisfied it  was working correctly. Something to keep an eye out for.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

That doesn't sound to good MH. Certainly shouldn't be doing that after only a couple of weeks. I think for peace of mind if I was you I would be taking it back to VW. Maybe can carry out a diagnostic check to see if any errors are thrown up.

Could be a sensor failure rather than the brake itself - either way if it happens again I'd get straight down to your local friendly VW dealer - you can't have that!

Might have to wait. It'll be parked up for 2 weeks as of Tuesday (will leave it in gear and put whhels in lock adjacent to kerb edge. I will organise something after that - pretty sure an error code will be visible to the garage when they run diagnostics.

Too many hand break turns mate!

Not a good start though in all seriousness, hopefully its just a fault sensor as suggested.

It will probably be nothing but a little software glitch. I remember when I got my Mk4 GT TDI that it did something strange on the dash (lost the MFI display) which came back after a restart and never did it again. The weirdest thing that happened was the window controls on the driver's side operating the wrong windows for one journey!

Aye, not worried until it happens again. Still a bit of a learning process for the car when it's this complicated.

I would get it scanned at least as it may delete any fault codes after a set amount of ok cycles.
If its gone to the extent of putting dash lights on its at least worth scanning.
