Advice needed in how to change a fuel pump
« on: 17 September 2013, 10:41 »
Hello

Just need some advice really.

Looking at buy a mk2 1.8 injection 8v but told that it needs a new fuel pump.

Firstly, where is the fuel pump located?  Do I have to remove fuel tank etc??

Is it a long/difficult job to do?  (I'm not a mechanic but able to carry out routine servicing on older VWs).   Not sure if this job is beyond me, or should I get a mechanic to do it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not sure with Kjet but with digi there is a lift pump in the tank which you can get to through the boot floor and the main fuel pump is attached to the underside of the car towards the rear wheel on the drivers side

You first need to check which pump you need? Best to get a helper IMO, turn ing on and see if pump is working in front of rear wheel it should run for 2-3secs and switch off.

I've changed both pumps four times now. Lift pump is in the tank under the boot carpet, remove the three screws holding cover in place then remove plug and both fuel lines, unscrew cap that holds sender in place and remove unit, pump is held on with pipe clip.

If its the injection pump you need 19mm spanner and screwdriver. Jack car up and support it with axel stands. Unplug loom from pump undo 19mm union and remove pipe, unscrew 3 screws and then pull pump from reservoir
Have a container ready as fuel will run out of reservoir and will be quite a lot.

If it's digi, and it's the undercar pump that needs replacing, get yourself a mk3 gti tank and swap it in, cheaper and more future proof than replacing the mk2 pump. If it's the lift pump in the tank, they're like 25quid and easy to change, as mentioned, access is from under the cover plate in the boot floor.

unplug the pump underneath the car (very easy to get at) now switch on ignition. if you hear buzzing from boot area then its the pump under car that has likely failed. if no buzzing its likely in tank pump that's failed.

label the pipes so you don't cross them up on assembly
