Grinding sound coming from the rear right.....
« on: 16 September 2013, 11:57 »
Saturday night the car started making a seriously loud, very worrying sound from the right rear. Limped home and Sunday morning noticed quite a bit of play in the wheel bearing (new about a year ago). Anyway proceeded to tighten it up a bit and much to my amazement the stub axle nut, that holds the disc and bearing in place had lost it's thread!

I honestly don't know how the wheel hasn't come off, the way I drive the car  :lipsrsealed: It explains why the rear has been stepping out a lot more often lately. The only thing holding the wheel on was the split pin and brake carrier!

New nut ordered from VW and back to safe and happy motoring!

Must have been put on pissed at some point or
If the bearing had seized then it could have driven the nut round and stripped but you would have a fragged cage and possibly pin as witnesses.
Either way you need new bearings and be sure you have not killed the stub or carriers.
Take care not to over tighten as this can cause seizure or failure and give you loose wheels

You 100% sure the bearing is okay. Currently doing a job for a neighbour that has a Focus that did the same the nut came loose he said he tightened it back up and two days later the bearing totally collapsed.  The only thing holding it on on the 70moh drive home was the brakes basically and it was vaguely centering on the stub. Trouble is the nut will not undo or 5 as they are in a cage and although I've got 4 out and reckon with some faffing could get the last section out I don't wanna reuse the hub.

Tbh mate I know it's annoying but I'd do the stub, nut and the bearing. I've got a stub you have have foc if you want it.

Where all my moneys went.

Stub axle is fine, as is the bearing, I pulled it out and checked it over.
