Maybe it wasn't the MAF Sensor then!
« on: 08 September 2013, 20:44 »
Hello,

New to the forum, having only just bought my latest mk4!

I have a GTI 1.8t, which is the 180bhp model. Over the moon with the car as it's fully kitted out and has loads of history!

However, it does not seem to be running right.

Basically, it just feels like it is not pulling as well as it should do, can be a bit lumpy and when just gradually building up the revs when driving (rather then just putting your foot down and booting it!) when you get to about 2800rpm, it seems to judder then keep accelerating, but without as much power, almost like its in some sort of safe mode!

Now I have done a fair bit of research, and all roads seem to be pointing towards the MAF sensor, so I have replaced this at the weekend, but still seem to be having the same problem! I have checked the spark plugs, they seem ok, but to be honest, it does not feel like a misfire, although I could be wrong! I have also had it checked out on a snap on and VAG computer, and neither have come back with any error codes.

Engine wise, its all fairly standard, with the exception of a k&n cone filter bolted straight onto the MAF sensor. I thought it might have been that, so I put the original air box on, but it made no difference.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any help/advice will be very much appreciated!

If you have anymore questions, then give me a shout.

Good point, will have a good look over the next couple of days when I have time! Not good about your turbo dude, how many miles had yours done? I can definitely hear mine boosting defiantly.

I wouldn't rule out a fault with the MAF as even when faulty they don't always trigger a fault code. Try disconnecting the sensor and if it idles and drives better then may well be the MAF.

Could be a coilpack or lambda sensor on the way out

Hi Scott, I have already replaced the maf this weekend, so have ruled that out now! I guess with the other two potential causes I need to wait for them to get worse before they show up as fault codes?

didn't notice you'd replaced it - need eyes testing

was having similar issues with mine boost juddering and eventually fault code for the secondary lambda came up.

coilpacks you might be able to get replaced as on recall - worth doing

only other thing I can suggest would be the N75 boost control valve or a vaccum/boost leak somewhere
