TDI-tuning.co.uk are marketing a plug in tuning box that claims 239PS and 495Nm torque. Can't say i've experienced it myself, but my dad had one of their boxes on his MK5 GT 170TDI DSG that was rated to uprate power to 200PS. It upped his power noticeably as well as his fuel economy. His MK5 with that box was more economical than his current MK7 GTD DSG.

I looked on the website and watched the video. I have to say I'm mighty confused about the to good to be true products they're selling!

I mean, if attaching a little box that costs a few hundred quid can give you such a performance boost as well as an extra 4-6mpg, why aren't manufacturers using these things, or tuning the engine like this as standard? It just seems to ridiculous to be real

Diesel tuning is quite simple in principal as it doesn't run a throttle like a petrol engine - the more fuel you throw in the more power it produces.
So in simple terms they just wind up the fuelling until it starts to smoke then wind the fuelling back a bit until it stops smoking. Voila - lots of extra power. That is in very basic terms how a tuning box works.
Digital ones have a few extra parameters to play with which will protect the engine internals a little bit from the extra heat and stresses produced and keep it smooth.

Thanks for the quick lesson. I have absolutely no knowledge on the inner workings of cars but I'm starting to become fascinated by the whole thing.

If boosting the economy and performance of my GTD (when it arrives) is so easy, I'll definitely be ordering one of these magic little boxes from the site in the next few months. I'm assuming that I'll have to remove the box when it's going back for servicing etc.

So it is possible to have more power and better fuel economy... In theory; however, if you use the extra power most of the time expect fuel consumption to suffer... The corrollary of the more fuel -> more power statement...

The fuel economy improvements should come when you're driving on part throttle and steady state...

And the fact that with the extra torque you stay in the higher gears more.

It'll help my economy then as I'll mostly be driving up and down the A9. I can easily sit at 60 behind traffic without getting an epic rage on, and use the power to overtake lorry's doing 50 or below.

Then of course when the roads are empty and I want to have a bit of fun....  That's the whole reason I choose the GTD over the Bluemotion.
