Head Gasket gone? 2000 W reg gti 2.0
« on: 03 September 2013, 19:56 »
A few days ago, the oil pressure warning light came on whilst driving.
It was on for only 2 seconds and went straight off. When I stopped the car (after 3 miles, not able to stop immediately) the expansion tank was full of thick browny orange oil/water, and it was leaking from the bottom.
The engine was making a fluttering noise before I stopped.
I havent started the car since, a mechanically minded friend thinks the head gasket has gone.
No gunge in oil filler cap, dipstick is dry.

Whats the verdict ? Is the head gasket gone ?

Dipstick should have oil above min and if theres oil in the coolant then head gasket needs doing... Any white smoke out of exhaust ?

sounds like the gasket has gone beside the oil pressure feed up to head. or it could be the oil cooler thing above filter that's gone.

So the engine is pretty much rebuilt with new gaskets etc.
Do I need to take any precautions with regards to speed / revs etc etc ?

Thanks

Personally, I would keep it under 2.5k for a couple of hundred miles. A nice easy motorway run usually helps out.

Same as above mate.
Shame the gasket went. Any reason why it happened?

Ok, ill take it easy for a bit

Looked at the old gasket when it came off, there were 2 rusty spots close together where it looks like the oil and water managed to get through and mix, hopefully nothing more serious than that. Should be on the road in next day or two

The golf is back on the road, running great. There is still oil on the surface of the water/coolant in the expansion tank. How do I get rid of this ? Someone mentioned a drop of fairy liquid ?
