Mk2 G60, All help appreciated
« on: 03 September 2013, 10:22 »
Hi

I am new to the site, infact new to the GTi scene. Just bought a 91' G60 in good condition.
When i turn the ignition on the oil light flashes constantly until i fire the car up then it goes off, i keep checking the oil and it is not using too much so i presume it is nothing to wurrie about?
Also the front and rear badges have been sprayed silver and look tacky, having trouble getting them out to re-paint

Cheers for the help in advance

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.
The oil light symptoms you describe are perfectly normal, only worry if the oil light comes on whilst the engine is running.

As for removing the badges, the front badge is removed by releasing 2 little clips at the rear lower edge of the badge, you can reach under the badge and do this, no need to remove the grill.
The rear badge is secured ny three little plastic pins, prise the badge off gently and evenly.

Cheers, i was looking all over for the clips yesterday but it was getting a little dark in the garage!
Really good to know it is normal and nothing to wurrie about!
In general traffic oil runs around 108 but can go upto 112/114 degrees planning to get a new cooler system soon but what is the usual oil temp, is it around 108?

Oil in the 90 to 110 range is normal. Over 120 not good...

I fitted an oil cooler to my G60 as I use it for the occasional track day. Knocked 10 to 20 off the temp when the car is being driven hard for longer periods....

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

I agree, anything over 120 is not ideal. Fitting an external oil cooler is a good idea on a g60 as the charger shares the engine oil and they're a little 'fragile'. I always liked fitting the mocal thermostatic kit whilst ditching the original vw oil/water stabiliser, use mk1 golf 1.6gti coolant hoses to delete the oe cooler as they do not have the extra spouts.

Those oil temps are normal on a G60 but no they're not good! G60's are known for this and it's what we advise sorting before anything else!

We've not yet got our cooler kit on the site but we are able to supply it, consists of a 13row cooler, Mocal thermostatic plate, pipework, coolant pipes to delete the factory cooler and a new oil filter thread to allow the full size filter to be retained.

Drop us an email - sales@onlychargeddubs.co.uk and we'll get you sorted out :)

I have removed the vw cooler thing on both my mk2s and to be honest the oil temp is still the same. so obviously they don't do nowt really.

Get a decent oil cooler and a Alu rad with slim line fans, that should cure all problems.
Plus make sure you have a valve on a larger oil cooler as you want heat in the winter as lack of heat in winter can cause damage.
The oil will not be up to temps.... charger go boom boom!
Make sure you have secured any oil pipes going to the charger and check for oil leaks if you have mucked about with the braided oil lines  :lipsrsealed:

the oil cooler head of an astra 17 diesel can be made to fit quite easily. mk4 btw. and they have the thermostat to. oh and the matrix could be made to fit by side of rad then you just have pipes to sort.

Thanks for all the help guys, sorry for the late reply, been hibanating all winter and now car season is coming back around i need to pull my finger out!!

I see a few people in P-VW using the Mocal oil coolers, you can pick them up off ebay for about £120, are they decent for the job?
Also the rad come in 2 sizes is bigger, better?? also where does the radiator sit, behind the intercooler?

Cheers again for any tips and advice?
