EU plans to fit all cars with speed limiters

All cars could be fitted with devices that stop them going over 70mph, under new EU road safety measures which aim to cut deaths from road accidents by a third.

With the amount of traffic on our roads I can hardly say we would notice!
But disagree and can't see this happening when they proposed this about 10 years ago on actual UK motorways, remember the charge per mile to use lanes similar tech both keep track on where we go and have been plus Google does a good job of that with the protect your device tracker

Not sure on the practicalities of this and what the possible implications for the car industry might be...and the birth of a black market in speed limiter removal and speed data spoofing?

Does the cost of implementation and enforcement outweigh the benefits? After all according to statistics road deaths are falling in the UK without the technology and in the EU deaths thought to be related to speed represent around 20% of total fatalities.

Of course it could just be a bit of Media scaremongering...

they want to try going to spain and seeing how they drive over there if they think we are bad? also to note the cars belong to us so without our permission I cannot see how they could do this also if they made it law to have it or you cannot drive your car, how can they inforce it, also whats to stop people removing them and surely this would effect the insurance companys and surely there prices would come down, also to note that not all crashes are over 70mph infact Id go as far to say I would imagen that more than likely only 7% would be at that speed, cannot see this happening tbh sounds like another "Cars wont pass MOT if there modded"

I will never be buying a new car. I would rather walk barefoot than own a modern car.

I thought they usually were limited to 155 mph from the factory.  Although that is a bit slow for the German autobahns.  Quite easily removed I think.

People will just have cars that can go to 70 in a blink of an eye, besides 8v's have had speed limiters built in since 92

I'm sure some cars are already capped, ie the TT-RS is capable at 160mph and more but its capped to 160...

What about other limitations, IE the German autobahn... then the hole some countries have higher speeds due to KMH in some cases, unless they standardize all roads across europe it won't happen, plus councils and local governments will become sad due to no hefty fines from speeding tickets or speed cameras as this would drastically fall. Ie my mates 400 euro speeding ticket in Holland, now if his car could only do 70 they wouldn't make such big money.

All in all, it won't happen, just BS media.

German 'mainstream' car companies have been capping top speeds since the 90s.

"Under the proposals new cars would be fitted with cameras"

As per madmanmart - not much for most of us to fret about for a couple more decades yet.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
