Price for a Mk3 'P' Colour concept?

Hiya
I've been drooling all over a Mk3 Blue Colour concept with 100K on the clock. Gearbox pops outta reverse unless you hang on to the stick, battery is loose in the tray, front tyres will need to be changed in about 1000 miles and there could be a small leak on the water inlet in the front of the block. But other than that it looks pretty good nick. What sort of price would you say was fair? It's been offered at a dealer who says £2650 for it with the bits sorted or about £500 less if I don't bother him too much!
Goddammit, I'm tempted now.....

Sounds fairly realistic if its a genuinely clean car. I'd be inclined to get someone who knows a bit more to look at it and take it less £500. £2k sounds good. Most cars of that age will have some probs needing attention and tyres aren't expensive. (Ebay is surprisingly good for tyres)
Re. the water inlet, is it just a perished pipe?
Maybe get someone else to tell you if the gearbox prob is a sign of worse things to come? or whether the reverse problem is isolated. (coz u can live with that)

Well the water inlet looks like it's probably the rubber 'o' ring that goes inside the plastic union that joins to the cylinder head. I'm not 100% of this, after all it could be the whole block is mush behind the plastic. But I had the same go on my Mk2, so I reckon it's gonna be ok...
The gearbox is worrying though. I was thinking of finding out more about gearboxes before I decide. Surely there is just a lever that keeps the car in gear, and that's the bit that's broke or worn? I say that because the car goes backwards ok if you hold it there!
(thanks for the replies so far!)

Id pay more and get the gearbox fixed , with a warranty on it .
Small leaks , battery loose , not too bad
Gearbox ........................ no no no no . Get them to sort it and guarantee the work .

Picked it up last night... Chuffed to bits!! FSH (not vag) clifford, aircon, leather, sunroof, smile, sod all power (!) but it's a fantastic car!!
Will post pics after I wash it properly (car sales places and their 'comedy valet' I ask you...)

The gearbox prob could have been the circlip on the bottom of the shaft coming off? (supposed to be common on mk3s)

well it doesn't pop outta gear now - the guy at the dealer said he replaced the actual gear in the gearbox. He said it had been worn. I'm not sure if I believe it or not, but the results are still the same.... It works!
