16v gearbox into an 8v ?
« on: 26 August 2013, 02:01 »
Just wondering if it's possible to fit the complete 16v gearbox set up to an 8v due to weakness of 8v box ?.

For instance,if i had a donor 16v that i could take everything off of would i run into any problems with speedo or anything else ?.

Iv'e got the gearbox, selector linkage, flywheel, clutch, pedal box, master cylinder reservoir (with outlet to feed clutch master),starter motor, slave cyliner and all pipework/brackets and i think i will need to rewire the reverse lights and use the 16v switch so all i'm trying to find out is if it's possible to do this conversion and are there other things i'm not aware of ?.

Thanks all.

Yeh it's not a hard job to do really but why not fit the engine too while you have it?

I don't see how it could work, the 8v uses the odd flywheel over the clutch arrangement and the 16v has a std flywheel set up. I can't see how you would get the flywheel mounted to the crank?

let us know how you get on though as this could save a few from the scrappers due to the getting rare decent/working 020 box

Thanks for all the relies so far.I'm hoping that the 16v flywheel will bolt on to the crank in the same way as the 8v clutch does.

Although i also have a very good 16v engine i just was'nt impressed with it enough to want to go that way.I have had 3 8v's and for some reason my current one is much quicker and responsive than my first two and i ca'nt quite work out why ????.It has the same minor mods as my first 2 but is a 3 door and has about 40k less than the others. It will do 120 comfortably all day long at around 5k which is more than enough for me lol.I do miss the powerband of the 16v but most of my driving is under 4k rpm so the extra fuel cost and insurance just is'nt worth it for me

I will update as soon as i know more.

Just one last question lol.! I have 2 gearboxes, both pretty much the same. One is from a VR6 the other from a 16v.Although they look identical im now wondering if they are different so can anyone suggest which would be the best to use if i can make it all fit ?.

Thanks.

Use the 16v flywheel and clutch with the box.

Although if you are going for this then you are halfway to doing a 16v conversion. I've drove a lot of mk3 8v's and 16v and a 8v has never come close. Plus fuel consumsion difference is minimal.

I wouldn't fit a 16v box. they far to low in the gearing. I would fit a mk3 1.9 diesel box.
