8v PB, No Fuel pumping- Please Help!
« on: 21 August 2013, 23:04 »
Hi Guys

Stumped by this, tried to setup the timing at the weekend, only once we'd made adjustments and went to fire it up, it turned over, buy no firing. A process of elimination eventually showed no fuel getting to the rail. Added a Can of fuel, no better. Replaced Fuel filter as thought it may be blocked. still no good.

Later, Disconnected in-tank fuel pump plug, checked pins, only one of the four is live (which incidently is the sender live, not the pump live. - I kinda expected 2 live pins.

Removed fuel pump from tank, directly connected 12v and pump spins fine.

On turning of key, Accumalator can be heard for a couple of seconds, lift pump in tank is silent, checked number 5 fuse (fuel pump) all ok, check relay 2 (fuel pump) corroded into fusebox like it has been sat in a puddle for 12 years. Eventually removed, and discarded very broken fuel pump relay, replaced with eurocarparts "topran" relay, which by all accounts is a fairly good branded one.

STILL ONLY ONE LIVE TO FUEL PUMP, NO LIFT PUMP ACTION!

Is there something I'm doing wrong, the car has one of the stupid alarm immobilisers, but I dont think its the issue, as when the immobilser kicks in, it kills off all he fueling components like the accumaltor etc as well, not just the pump as far as I know

Any suggestions greatly appeciated!!

Have you checked for a spark? Only say this because it could be a way of eliminating whether its the immobiliser or not.
Had similar issue in a 944. It killed spark and fuel pump till I ripped it out.

Try direct connection to the pump whilst its fitted to tank and try starting it, if it does start you know problem with feed to pump if not prob no spark as already stated

Sack the immobiliser and hard-wire the pump to test, as suggested.

If the relay was knackered it may be the internals of the fusebox are shot away and you need to replace the whole unit - if they're blessed with water over a long time they will go off.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Getting a spark, so seems its not the immobiliser?

Cleaned all the connections on lift pump this morning and now I can get the pump to spin powering from the to plug which is progress, However, Still only one live to the main plug for the lift pump. It could be the fusebox, just strange it seems to have happended from one use to the next, thought I might see previous signs of the connections failing rather than it just giving up all at once.

I've ordered some electrical contact spray so gonna clean up all the fusebox connections tonight, there isnt any sort of fuel cut-off fitted to my model is there?

nope. but if main pump is working then I would suspect a bad connection back there as they are both powered off same loom.

If your fusebox is corroded inside your spray won't do sh*t.  Inside your fusebox there is this, which may have rotted out:

there isnt any sort of fuel cut-off fitted to my model is there?

Fuel delivery is controlled by the ECU - primes on power-up, then runs when the engine is running.
