1.8T 150bhp K04..
« on: 21 August 2013, 12:42 »
Hey guys i use to own a Golf 1.8T but i bought it done up with a few engine toys but on monday im picking up a totally standard one to do it up myself.

Been reading that K04 gives a good amouth of power unsure if its the same for 150bhp and 180bhp models....
1st thing i will be doing is fitting a 007P forge DV, and maybe a turbo back with sports cat.
Unsure where to take it from after there... go for k03s which id imagine gives much less problems and far more reliable, or go for the K04. Fuel useage doesnt bother me but having a car thats in the garage every other month does.

What would the K04 get me BHP wise with the usual exhaust, samco hoses, induction, fmic, remap?
And same question but with K03s

as said my last golf already had work done so i left it as it was and just want decent poke :)

cheers for any help guys :)

Stock turbo is the ko3 or ko3S depending on engine code dude.

an AGU or ARZ will have a KO3, good for around 190-195bhp tops.

AUM or AUQ engines will have a ko3S, which with supporting mods can see you to about 230ish typically.

A ko4 is a totally different turbo and a reasonably involved conversion, needing the turbo, manifold, downpipes, lines etc etc, then injectors, MAF, all sorts. depending on how far you want to take it a ko4 could see you anything from 250-300bhp.

sure mine is the K03 as its just the 150bhp 5 speed model

was expecting abit more from the K03s in all fairness

Yeah i have seen the work involved in doing the K04 was just wandering if its worth it.. as ive heard it hurts the reliability alot? or is that sh!te? How much could you pick up all the bits for a k04 upgrade (used) just for a base price know someone that could easily fit the lot

how can it hurt reliability?
Some 1.8t's came with k04's fitted, Providing it built and mapped well there isn't any reason for it to be unreliable.

AUM were also 150bhp 5 speed, and had the ko3S. needs an engine code to determine what it'll be mate.

ko4 - no less reliable than any ko3 if it's done right, after all, they were standard on the S3, LCR, and TT, people just tend to cut corners and run into issues.

K04 is well worth while I believe, you get a huge range of bolt on parts for tuning, and the option to fit a hybrid down the line with potential for 330bhp+.

Price wise, ko4 setups seem to go for around the £500 mark for a turbo and manifold with a few associated parts, have a hunt around.

sooo, its pointless me doing anything to the car until I have done the K04? I have left a deposit on an after market exhaust im buying with sports cat with 4 bolt pattern at turbo end would this still be good for use? Also would a usual induction kit fit or would I need a bigger one / make my own with hoses and cone :\? totally new to moding golfs so im sorry for sounding rather daft haha

Sports cat would probably be useless, exhaust will still be useable though. Cone with a heatshield is probably the best way to go
