Quick heads up
« on: 18 August 2013, 09:31 »
Just a quick heads up so nobody else makes the same mistake
I recently put a new clutch in my 8 valve so while the gearbox was out I decided to drain the oil and replace it with new
I went to gsf and he gave me 2 ltrs of carlube ep 80/90 gl5 gear oil.
I knew the Haynes recommends ep 80 gl4 but the guy at gsf assured me the oil they gave me was ok.
Anyway after running this gear oil for about 4 days I soon realised all was not well, when cold gears were very hard to select even when doubling the clutch and the new thrust bearing was noisy and it wasn't much better when warmed up. I then ordered some fully synthetic morriss ep 80 gl4 and changed the oil again.
The fully synthetic had good reviewes so I was very disappointed when the gear change was exactly the same as with the carlube oil in, at this point I started to have doubts about the new clutch I had just replaced, did I do it right, did I not tighten something, did I get water in the box when I steam cleaned it.
So I bit the bullet and went to Vw dealer (which I should have done in the first place) and was surprised to find 2 ltrs of the correct Vw oil only £12, less than I had paid for the fully synthetic.
Gear change is now nice and smooth like it was originally and thrust bearing quiet. 'PHEW'

Moral of the story buy cheap buy twice or three times in my case :embarrassed:

Cheers for that. I'm just about to do this on mine so good stuff. Albeit my dealership is useless.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

Shouldn't make any difference to thrust bearing noise
