What's your oil temp?
« on: 15 August 2005, 23:50 »
Just out of interest, what range of oil temps do your dubs run at?

As a reference, my old 8v used to never really go over 104c when on motorway,
my newer 16v seems to be slightly hotter, on the motorway last night at 100+ a lot of way was 112c for a while, usually 106c in traffic, does it vary from engine to engine and also does it depend on what oil you use? I use quantum silver synta
The water temp gauge just below middle
Cheers,
si

Our 8v runs at most 102-104, mostly around the mid 90 mark.

We have found differences in using different thickness oils, our car run on Royal Purple Racing 51 (20w/50) in the summer months and then Racing 41 (15w/40) in the winter months, the racing oil tends to break down quicker then Royal Purples industry approved oils due to the property of the Racing oil has no detergents etc. But on the flip side the racing oil runs 6-8 degrees cooler when fresh but your change intervals are much shorter.

The thermostat and the fan switch have been replaced with Neuspeed items in order for the fan to cut in at 180 degrees rather then the 197 standard set-up, the gauge never goes above 1/4 for the coolant, reducing water temperature induces more top end power.

Oil coolers also work very well when position appropriately within an engine bay, in some cases worth an additional 10-15 degrees of cooler running.

92 normally. rising to around 98 in traffic or being riven hard. Digifant.

my 16v is usually no less than 90, on a straight drive but more usually sitting at around 100 - 104.

When sitting in traffic it often goes to 112.

Do I need to be worried? :undecided: :undecided: :undecided:

no.

When it starts rising into the mid 20s and above then shut the engine down. Usual idle temp for 8v = about 90, for 16v = 95

Some will just idle slightly higher as they are older old one used to run at 114-118 (valver when under load) one i have currently has not broken 102.

when i first got my valver i was a bit concerned about the temperature it is running at especially after it overheated on my first day of having it (knackered thermostat), as i was used to my 1.6 driver but i understand that it is normal to be at around 95 degrees when pootling about and about 105 when in traffic. My temp gage was about 2 thirds of the way up.
