16V engine in an 8V GTi....
« on: 14 August 2013, 09:25 »
Just for curiosity, does a 16V Mk3 engine drop straight into the existing set up for an 8V GTi?

Or would it then involve changing gearboxes etc?

I probably wouldn't do this but I've seen a 16V engine at a very reasonable price and it just got me thinking.....

Far easier and cheaper to sell your 8v, if anybody is dumb enough to buy it, then buy a 16v

Wouldn't be any point doing that, it's rust free (literally none) with only 55k on the clock and has cost me practically nothing to keep on the road in the last 2 years it's in that good condition....which is why the idea of a cheap 16V transplant sprang to mind for a bit of extra umph

It's no big deal as it's our 2nd car and is only really used as a runarond/kid carrier it certainly wasn't bought for speed

That said I woulldn't mind having a play with the set up at some point....are there any reliable plug and play chips available for the 8V for an extra 10/15bhp?? I chipped an BMW E36 325i coupe a few years back and it made quite a difference

Keep it clean, standard, rust free for a good few years, even garage it. Won't be many around in a few years time probs.

I had an 8v, was thinking about puting a 16v lump in it. Save your cash and hassle and buy a second mk3 which is a 16v. Or even better, stick a 1.8t in it

If yours is really clean and tidy then go for it, not really that hard a conversion to do.

8v chips on eBay, item number 221207075324. I have one of these on my 8v and could tell a difference straight away. Offer him £40 and hopefully yours will be a push fit chip and if not i get a pc repair guy to solder it in, mine cost £20 for fitting.

This looks like the kind of thing I was after, should give her a little boost and my other half won't even notice as she never gases it past 2500rpm anyhow....ideal

I'll get the ECU number later and get one ordered.
