Lead from new iPod to VW?
« on: 13 August 2013, 18:28 »
When I bought my car I got 2 leads in the armrest.  One that had a USB connector on it, and one with an iPod connector.
Obviously Apple have changed their connector over the last year or so.
I just bought a new iPod which has the 'lightning' connector on it, and am going to get a new iPhone 5S(?) when they come out in the next month or two.
Do VW do a lead that connects the lighting connector - or do I just have to buy one of those naff adapters?

No they don't do one yet. Mine was fine with the adapter but it does make it a bit of a tight fit in the arm rest, you will have to have the arm rest up a touch.

Thanks...
I wonder if / when they will take one out?
I don't fancy the idea of having to cram it in the armrest!

As said, VW don't do a lightning lead yet.

Just make sure you buy a genuine Apple Lightning to 30 pin adaptor as some third party ones do not work properly and are a false economy.  Apple do two versions of adaptor- one has a little lead (about 5") and the other doesn't.  Both work fine so it's down to personal preference.  It is a snug fit but mine goes in cubby hole ok and I can get arm rest all the way down.

I rang VW the other week and they just recommended the apple adapter, saying they had no plans or info on a new cable... BUT some VW dealerships around here are useless.

What ever you do don't look on eBay, the fake adapters don't support audio just charging.

Bit of a div when it comes to this sort of thing, what benefits are there other than charging of useing the cable rather  than Bluetooth?

My understanding and experience is that connection via the cable gives full access to everything just as it is on your ipod/itunes i.e. artists; songs; playlists etc, they are selectable as they are on the device.

Connecting via BT audio gives a more random selection of music which streams from the device, but you have much less control over selections and you have to scroll through tracks.  I could be wrong but this is how it is in mine.

We all know that battery life is sh!te for the iPhone and using the mmi charges it too.
