its hunting by the sounds of things.. my car needed a new fuel pressure reg and a lamada probe, it drank fuel like there was no tomorrow! i never actually got round to replacing these (lack of cash) but instead i put a small bottle of red ex in the fuel (halfrauds at 99p!!) let that run threw then did the same again when i re-fueled, seems to be running much better.

I find its not drinking that much fuel any more, it idles properly and i have no more black smelly smoke out the back either

Overfuelling .. dont you just love complicated ECU's

Its possible its metering the air wrong, so as above.. could be MAF. If you unplug the MAF the ecu should revert back to default values for metering and should run better (although not perfect).

There could be a lot of other reasons why it's chucking in extra fuel.. a visit to someone with VAG-com could save you a lot of trouble.

some times temp sensors fail (theres 2 one for the guage, and one for the fueling/ecu) if the ecu one fails it may make the ecu think the engine is 'cold' and therefore over fuel the engine, which when warm dosnt need all that fuel and can cause irratic idling....... just a thought... if not sounds like maf prob to me...
