mk2 golf 8v temperature gauge HELP PLEASE
« on: 06 August 2013, 15:43 »
Hi all,

I have had an ongoing problem for the past 6months or so, my temp gauge reads at 3/4 and stays there until left to cool down so i have tried absolutely everything i can possible think of, so far have replaced the following: radiator switch, coolant sensor (sender), tried 2 couple of mates radiators just to be safe and flushed mine, new expansion tank and blue cap and new thermostat fan works on both speeds i have tested it and all the wiring to the fan is fine, my brain is totally fried and i cant think of anything else to physically check? would anyone suggest It could either be the water pump or the actual gauge on my clocks is faulty?

I have compared it to a friends 8v it seems to heat um in the same manor the Stat opens as far as i can tell on time at around 85degrees and the fan comes on a min or so later so would be on time around 95degrees but the temp is reading 3/4 by this point which is to high as this should be happening around the 1/2 way mark, i understand that most will think well your not over heating just getting a false reading but i would appreciate any help as it shouldn't be happening and would like to get it fixed before i buy another set of clocks to try and see if the gauge is faulty.

cheers All

The gauge is only a guide and they do vary in readings. The wifes is always higher than mine... What does the MFA say?

Bear in mind these gauges are the old fashioned style and work by voltage running through a copper wire to move the needle.

Plug in another set of clocks a see if you get different reading on the gauges.

thanks for the reply yer this was my theory, i may well be just other thinking but would be nice to have the gauge sitting at half way so my mind is at peace lol i think ill try another set of clocks and see what happens unless anyone else knows of anything else that could be of use?  cheers chaps

did you try your mates temp sensor in yours? And vice versa? Non genuine temp sender can give different resistance meaning gauge reads higher

Could well be your water pump. If the impeller is worn it wont shift sufficient water to cool the engine.

i never tried my mates temp sender as its from a later mk2 so it had the later connections, i have a replacement set of clocks coming so i will see how this works out if not i can only try the water pump even though the water flow seems ok but you never know i guess

A good investment would be one of those laser temperature guns. My vr6 gauge reads low and I was able to confirm correct temps.

can you not get an adapter plug to run the later sender. You can get them for gearbox reverse light switch so id assume itd be similar for sender

Are the two sensors interchangeable though? or do the different clocks use different sensors? maybe different resistance ranges?

thanks

Lots a great advice being posted, cheers guys

That lazer temperature sensor sound like a great idea never come across somthing like that before I will most definitely look into investing in one still waiting for these clocks to turn up so once there fitted  ill update cheers all
