You can't spend your life waiting for the next product to be released (unless it is really imminent).

I'm getting a MK7 now (apparently) and have not even spared a thought for the MK8.  If you take this view, you will be waiting for the MK9 to come out when the 8 is released.

Remember, tomorrow never comes!

Although I am waiting for the iPhone 5C - I want the plastic cover because I am going to have my uncle spray it in VW Oryx White paint to match the car, what a saddo!

If you wait for next years technology you'll never buy anything or if you do you will probably just regret it and be hankering over its replacement.
Keeping up with technology is a costly business.

VW will be working on the MK8 just now that's for sure.

I just think it would look neat have the phone sat in the Brodit holder in a matching colour to the outside.

Then even when you are in the car you get a reminder of how damn cool the colour is from the inside!  I will post a picture when it is done.

To be honest I did think about giving him my bicycle frame and forks and having those sprayed the same too.

*** mighty big thread bump ***

Yeah, I'm holding out for the Mk8 Golf.

I have just paid off my Mk6 GTD. I though I would have it a few years before the Mk7 arrived. It took 9 months to arrive and VW decide to replace the Mk6 after only 4 years. So my new car was the old Golf after about a year. I was slightly p***** off. So I am not taking the chance this time. My current Golf is fine for another year or two.

Apparently the Merc A Class is being updated after just 3 years. It will be interesting to see if VW have moved to a 4 year update cycle. My guess is a new Golf announced at the end of next year, for sale in early 2017. So the Mk8 GTI is still potentially 2 years away.

To add more fuel to this debate please see the release dates for the Mk7 Golf below; I have used these dates a make an mock release time table to the Mk8 Golf based on a 4 or 5 build cycle. Of course this is all hypothetical and I could be completely wrong!

Golf Mk7 Dates
October 2012 - Mk7 Golf announced with prices and engine details unveiled
November 2012 - Mk7 Golf order books open
February 2013 - First deliveries to UK customers
Summer 2013 - Golf GTI expected to be announced.
Autumn 2013 - First Golf GTI deliveries expected

4 Year build Cycle
October 2016 - Mk8 Golf announced with prices and engine details unveiled
November 2016 - Mk8 Golf order books open
February 2017 - First deliveries to UK customers
Summer 2017 - Golf GTI expected to be announced.
Autumn 2017 - First Golf GTI deliveries expected

5 Year build Cycle
October 2017 - Mk8 Golf announced with prices and engine details unveiled
November 2017 - Mk8 Golf order books open
February 2018 - First deliveries to UK customers
Summer 2018 - Golf GTI expected to be announced.
Autumn 2018 - First Golf GTI deliveries expected

I would like to add to your prediction chart.  The GTI order books opened end of March 2013.  So 4 yr plan would see the GTI orders being taken on March (spring) 2017 and the 5 yr plan would see the GTI order book opened on march (spring) 2018.

So we should start seeing something by mid to late 2016...  Earilest,  fingers crossed

There's a little inaccuracy in the MK7 release dates. My neighbour had a MK7 SE in December 2012, and you could order a GTI/GTD on the 3rd week of March. I think my Dad's GTD was the first one that arrived in the UK and posted on this forum - he picked it up July 1st.

The MK8 is pretty much just going to be a facelift of the MK7, that car was a huge jump in tech, equipment  and refinement over the MK5/6, and the MK6 was no great improvement over the MK5 - slightly different styling and marginal output improvements on some of the engines but essentially the same car.

The car industry is going the way of mobile phones, giving you a reason to chop one in every few years even though the generational gains might not be much from one to the next.

Save for ACT tech debuted on the 1.5TSI, there have been very few true technological improvements made to fuel economy in the last 5 years - stop-start gains for mpg have been massively overstated because the test cycle output can be massively affected by it, but real world gains are tiny unless you're shuffling along a gridlocked London road. All the recent improvements have been in weight saving (we're getting thinner body panels - are they really as sturdy as those from VWs of old that were built like tanks?) and connectivity tech (MP3/BT/Phone integration).

I'd likely be more peeved I bought a MK6 just before the MK7 came out, rather than buying a MK7 just before the MK8 came out.
